One of the perks of sailing on a yacht is that you often end up surrounded by people with a deep love for the sea. And somehow, the atmosphere is always cheerful and the memories—wonderful, whether you’re traveling with old friends or meeting new ones for the first time onboard.
Whether they’re seasoned sea wolves or enthusiastic adventurers, we’ll just call them “sailors.” These people have certain qualities that make them the perfect company for any trip. What are they?
They travel light
Storage space on a boat is limited, and everything has to fit into small lockers. A waterproof duffel bag is a sailor’s go-to. They won’t hog your car trunk or hotel closet—and you won’t be waiting for them at baggage claim. You’ll be out of the airport and into your adventure in no time!
They never complain about sleeping arrangements
Sailors are used to sleeping in tight bunks or even on deck, with or without a pillow. You won’t hear them moan about hostel beds or sleeping bags. Long flights, overnight buses—no problem. They can sleep anywhere, even sitting up.
Same goes for bathrooms
Sailors have done their business in all sorts of conditions. Most are used to balancing while holding onto something as they go. That questionable toilet in Thailand or India, where you have to squat, twist, or balance on one leg? Not an issue.
They know how to make the most of short stops
Used to rushing off due to a dragging anchor or to dodge a port fee, sailors can find the nearest shop and be back before you even finish tying your shoelaces. Think of them as the MacGyvers of groceries and beer runs.
They help you avoid tourist traps
Sailors have a radar for spotting and avoiding tourist traps. Ports are often full of them, and they’ve learned to navigate away from the overpriced and overcrowded.
Sailors somehow know everyone
All it takes is tossing out a few names of fellow sailors—“Oh, do you know so-and-so?”—and bam! Suddenly you’re VIPs at a beach party you didn’t know existed.
They know the best local spots
They’re used to buying local produce and using local services at almost every port. Need a great tip? Ask at any marina office—they’re bound to have the inside scoop on hidden local gems.
They can fix almost anything
Rule number one: If it moves and shouldn’t—duct tape. If it doesn’t move and should—WD40. Sailors are handy folks to have around when something breaks.
They don’t freak out about bad weather
They often wait days for a good “weather window” to sail. A rainy day just means it’s time to hit a local bar, chat with the locals, and swap salty stories. They’ll find a way to have a good time—and you’ll be right there with them.
When your sunset photo fails, just steal one of theirs
They’ll always have a better one. Probably 5,000 better ones.
On most coastlines, your chances of getting invited aboard skyrocket if you’re with a sailor
Sailors have wide networks of friends who are constantly sailing the globe. They make friends easily—and fast. Don’t be surprised if you’re invited for drinks (or a sail!) on a neighboring boat.
They know the best beaches and surf spots
Always tuned into tides and wind forecasts, sailors can point you toward the best places to surf or unwind.
They can make lasagna with a gas torch
Can your regular travel buddies say the same? If you find yourself somewhere with no kitchen, your sailor friend will whip up magic with whatever’s at hand.
You won’t wait around for them to get dolled up
Sailors don’t need blow dryers or beauty kits. Wind-blown hair and a permanent sun-kissed glow are all they need.
They won’t panic without a charger or Wi-Fi
A headlamp and a book are enough. You won’t hear them complain about weak Wi-Fi—they genuinely don’t care.
They’re the original Boy Scouts
They carry a multitool everywhere. Need a wine bottle opened? They’ve got it covered. Priceless.
They function as human GPS
Sun and stars are all they need. Lost? Want to know where south is? Follow the sailor.
They know how to sew
It may sound odd, but it’s totally normal for them to pull out a needle and thread. Sails don’t mend themselves. Got a torn backpack? Your sailor buddy will have it fixed in minutes.
Sailors know that every single moment is worth living fully
We’ll leave the final word to you 🙂
