This is a question that excites anyone looking for the perfect vacation.
With Ryanair offering round-trip flights from Sofia to Athens starting at just €20, we really have no excuse not to get ahead of the crowds, soak in the early summer sun, and treat ourselves to a different kind of adventure.
Sailing outside the peak season is fantastic for many reasons (keep reading to find out why), but if we had to pick just one, we’d say April is the BEST month of the entire year—at least in our (humble) opinion.
If you’re on the fence about it, we have just two words for you: DO IT!
The atmosphere, the energy, the vibe—call it what you like—everyone is in an AMAZING mood. That doesn’t mean people are grumpy the rest of the year, of course. But in April, the season is just beginning, and you can feel it. It’s like the spirit of spring is alive not just in nature, but in people’s moods and actions—shops reopen, tavernas prepare for the season, and the Greeks emerge from their winter break feeling ALIVE and eager for another summer.
Don’t get us wrong—we love every month. October, for example, is also a lovely time. The weather in recent Octobers has been amazing (with the occasional storm). Just like in April, the evenings are cool—which is actually a refreshing change after the hot summer months.
But October is the end of the season: shops start to close, tavernas offer reduced menus, and the overall atmosphere is a little melancholic—waiting for next summer…
But we digress—let’s get back to APRIL!
5 REASONS WHY APRIL IS THE MONTH IN SOUTHERN GREECE:
1. Greek Easter – A huge celebration with traditions and feasts everywhere. In Greece, Easter is bigger than Christmas!
2. No crowds – Empty bays and marinas just for us—true peace and relaxation.
3. Cheap direct flights from Sofia to Athens – Save time and hassle and jump straight into the adventure.
4. Fantastic weather – April 2018, for instance, had daytime temps around or over 30°C.
5. Perfect sailing conditions – Because motoring just isn’t as fun! Winds in April are often stronger than in high summer, making for more exciting and efficient sailing.
5 REASONS TO SAIL EARLY IN THE SEASON IN GENERAL:
1. You’re always welcome, and everyone’s happy to see you! You might be the first customer that restaurant has seen in 6 months.
2. The area is calm until mid-June, with relatively few boats around.
3. Save money! Off-season means great deals on boats and sailing trips—ours included!
4. Flights are significantly cheaper too.
5. Summer comes to you earlier—while others are still deciding what to do, you’re already working on your first tan!
